Mahavir Jayanti is a significant religious festival celebrated by Jains around the world. It marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the 24th and last Tirthankara (spiritual teacher) of Jainism.
Lord Mahavir was born as Vardhamana in 599 BCE in the present-day Bihar, India. He renounced worldly life at the age of 30 and embarked on a spiritual quest. After years of meditation and ascetic practices, he attained enlightenment (kevala jnana) at the age of 42. For the next 30 years, he preached Jain philosophy, emphasizing non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), non-attachment (aparigraha), and compassion towards all living beings.
Mahavir Jayanti typically falls in March or April, depending on the lunar calendar. Jains celebrate this day with prayers, hymns, processions, and charitable activities. Temples are adorned with decorations, and devotees gather to listen to the teachings of Lord Mahavir. The festival serves as a reminder of Mahavir’s teachings of non-violence, simplicity, and self-discipline, which are considered essential for leading a spiritually fulfilling life in Jainism. It also provides an opportunity for Jains to reflect on his life and teachings and to renew their commitment to following the path of righteousness.
